7/25/2009

An 11-year-old girl from Newport, Mich., died as a result of a collision between two vehicles in Perrysburg Township on Friday. One was driven by her mother and the other by a woman attempting to turn left onto Glenwood Road from U.S. 20, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The girl, Haley Penix, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 4:20 p.m. accident. She was a front-seat passenger in the car driven by her mother, Gayle A. Penix, 31, also of Newport.

Troopers said Ms. Penix was eastbound on U.S. 20 when she failed to yield while turning left on Glenwood and her car was struck by a pickup driven by Amy Spencer, 22, of Oregon.

The impact caused the Penix car to spin and strike a car stopped on southbound Glenwood. Debris struck a fourth vehicle.

Ms. Penix was treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and Ms. Spencer at St. Luke's Hospital.
