Toxic Luckey site to get $1M in stimulus funds

8/1/2009

LUCKEY The Army Corps of Engineers announced it will use $1 million in federal stimulus money for preparatory work involving cleanup at the former Brush Wellman Engineered Materials site in Troy Township.

The Corps seeks more data about contamination at the 40-acre site before it begins the cleanup.

So far, it has found beryllium, lead, and uranium in the soil and groundwater.

Last month, it hired a Tennessee firm for $719,000 to assist in the project. It plans to conduct its annual sampling of groundwater this month.

From 1949 to 1958, the site was a production facility for Brush Beryllium Co., which became Brush Wellman.

The firm moved to Elmore in 1958.
