Elevator closing delayed at Perry Monument

8/10/2009

PUT-IN-BAY The closing of the elevator that goes to the top of Perry s Victory and International Peace Memorial has been pushed back to Oct. 1, according to the National Park Service.

Visitors to the memorial can ride the elevator to the observation deck for at least two more months. The observation deck had been slated to be closed this month to allow for elevator repairs.

The deck damaged from freeze-and-thaw cycles is also slated for repair. Federal stimulus funds will underwrite some of the work.

Three years ago, a 500-pound piece of granite fell from the observation deck, and officials closed the upper plaza.
