An early-morning fire closed the popular Monnette's Market in Sylvania.

What started as a wastebasket fire caused an estimated $80,000 damage to a Sylvania market early Friday, authorities said.

Sylvania Township fire crews arrived about 4:20 a.m. at Monnette's Market Place, 5849 Alexis Rd., and found flames and thick smoke coming from the storage room, Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski said.

Fire crews had the fire under control by about 5:50 a.m., by which time it had spread throughout the storage room of the about-8,000-square-foot single-story structure, Chief Kowalski said.

The damage estimate included the damage to the produce in the market. The fire was ruled accidental, with the exact cause unknown, the deputy fire chief said.
