A 4-year-old girl was flown to a Toledo hospital Friday after her mother accidentally struck her with a riding lawn mower, fire officials said. The accident occurred at 5:13 p.m. in the 6100 block of Nebraska Avenue. The girl was playing in the yard at the time, and the mother was mowing grass.


A 68-year-old man charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly shot his grandson in the leg during an argument in their South Toledo home was released on his own recognizance Friday shortly after the victim died. Charles Loving was arrested late Thursday and accused of shooting his grandson with a shotgun in their home, Toledo police said.


The president and CEO of the YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo led a 40-person contingent of his employees and supporters to the South Toledo Y Friday to confront state Sen. Teresa Fedor and south-end Y members who were holding a news conference to complain about his management of the organization. The noon-hour news conference soon devolved into shouting matches and a heated confrontation involving the neighborhood Y members and a visibly angry Robert Alexander, head of the YMCA in Toledo since 1989. Friday, Mr. Alexander was leading an angry crowd of YMCA headquarters employees who repeatedly shouted down Ms. Fedor and several critics of his plan to shut down the South branch.


Officials say two people have been killed when a biplane crashed near a football scrimmage at an Ohio high school. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the single-engine plane took off Friday night from West Harrison Airport, and crashed within minutes. Sgt. Clint Arnold says it wasn t immediately known if the plane lost power. Officials say the pilot and a female passenger died in the crash near McNicholas High School in Harrison.


A 19-year-old Waterville man was killed Sunday morning on his way to work after his car struck a tree off Monclova Road in Swanton Township, authorities said. Jacob M. J. Childers, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:24 a.m., said Steve Kahle, an investigator for the Lucas County Coroner's Office. Mr. Childers was traveling west on Monclova Road, west of State Rt. 295, when his car veered off the right side of the roadway. He steered back onto the road but overcorrected, and his Pontiac Grand Am went off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.


A Fort Wayne, Ind., woman is dead and another woman is critically injured as a result of a traffic accident Saturday at the intersection of State Rts. 613 and 15, two miles east of here, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol. Troopers said Bette Harris, 76, was pronounced dead at St. Rita's Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center, Glandorf, after the 10:15 a.m. accident.

Eighty-four seized vehicles Saturday raised $79,150 at auction, Toledo police said. About $61,000 of the sum will go into the city's general fund to help offset city operating expenses, Officer Dalton Wilkinson said. Some $13,800 will go into the law enforcement trust fund, which can be used to buy bullet-proof vests and other items not provided for in public grants. Much of the remainder goes toward auctioneer fees and other costs.
