Grandfather won't face charges in fatal shooting

A 68-year-old man accused in the shooting death of his grandson will not face criminal charges.

A Lucas County grand jury declined to indict Charles Loving last week for shooting the 24-year-old man during an argument that resulted in the younger man's death. He could have faced charges of aggravated assault or voluntary manslaughter.

Authorities said Mr. Loving was arrested Aug. 20 after the shooting. Antwan Loving of 1114 Wenz Rd. was pronounced dead the next morning at the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio.

Officers responding to a report of a man shot arrived about 9:50 p.m. and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the leg, lying on the kitchen floor, police said.

Authorities said an argument occurred prior to the shooting and that Antwan Loving allegedly lunged at his grandfather, who had armed himself with the gun in an attempt to get the young man to leave their South Toledo house. During the fight, the gun went off, police said.
