NRC finds FirstEnergy met Davis-Besse terms

9/12/2009

OAK HARBOR — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has determined FirstEnergy Corp. met the terms of a 2004 order which placed conditions on the restart of Davis-Besse.

The NRC had imposed the conditions after a two-year shutdown following the discovery in 2002 of a football-sized hole on the reactor vessel head.

The restart order required FirstEnergy to perform annual independent assessments in a variety of areas for five years. It also required a one-time inspection on the reactor during a midcycle outage to ensure it was free of boric acid.

FirstEnergy paid $33.45 million in fines over the incident.
