Ferry terminal awarded federal grant

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio - The local ferry terminal is to be renovated and equipped with a solar-panel array under a grant announced yesterday by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Steve Katich, chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo), said the funding was included by Miss Kaptur in recent legislation and is intended to promote alternative energy sources and highlight northwest Ohio's developing solar-energy technology.

The grant requires a 20 percent local match, or about $120,000, Mr. Katich said.

Along with installing the solar array, he said, the building's roof will be replaced. The federal and local funds combined are expected to cover the project's entire cost.
