$247,000 grant to help students select careers

10/5/2009

FREMONT — A new center of the Ohio College Access Network will be housed at Terra Community College.

The North Coast Center of Excellence will put advisers in high schools to help students choose career opportunities, select a program or college, and navigate the application and financial aid processes.

The goal of the center is to encourage students — especially those who are first-generation, minority, or underserved — to pursue their educational goals.

The local colleges involved include Terra, Bowling Green State University and its Firelands branch just south of Huron, Heidelberg University, and Tiffin University.

A $247,000 grant from the Ohio College Access Network and the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp. will help support the regional effort in Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Seneca counties.

The grant will help fund two regional directors of advising services and five advisers in area school districts.
