Monroe gets $350,000 to buy land at battlefield

MONROE — The city of Monroe has been awarded a $350,000 federal grant to acquire land for the future River Raisin Battlefield National Park.

City Council on Monday approved accepting the grant from the National Park Service. The grant doesn't require matching funds from the city.

The city applied last month to the U.S. Department of the Interior to obtain funds for the War of 1812 battlefield.

Legislation signed into law by President Obama in April designated the battlefield site as a unit of the park system, putting it under the jurisdiction of the Interior Department for development.
