A crew member of the Canadian grain vessel Cuyahoga was hurt when the vessel's loading boom had a mechanical failure when the ship was docked Thursday night east of the DiSalle Bridge, authorities said.

The victim, whose name and condition were being withheld, managed to walk off the ship and was taken to an area hospital, according to Richard Minnich, the senior marine investigator for the U.S. Coast Guard marine safety unit in Toledo.

The loading boom of the 600-feet-long vessel was swung over the Andersons' dock about 10 p.m. when it got tangled with the dock loading arm, Mr. Minnich said.

Toledo fire and rescue units, including the water rescue unit, responded to the vessel about 10:15 p.m. Authorities said nearly 20 people were aboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard also came to the aid of the vessel.
