BAIRDSTOWN, Ohio — An 8-year-old girl from southeastern Wood County has been taken by air ambulance to a Toledo hospital after she, a sister, 11, and their mother, Stephanie Rock, were attacked by a dog Thursday, Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said.

The dog, which was on the loose, was shot and killed by the girl's father, Steven Rock, the sheriff said, adding that his investigator and the Wood County Dog Warden are trying to find the dog's owner, if one exists.

The attack occurred about 3 p.m. in Bairdstown, just north of the Hancock County line.

County dog warden Rodney Cook said the dog had no identification. It weighed 40 to 50 pounds and appeared to be an English bulldog-pit bull mix. The dog had no scars and did not appear to be a fighting dog..

The animal's head was removed and will be sent to a Columbus laboratory to be tested for rabies, Mr. Cook said.

Mr. Cook said he received a report of a dog wandering in the area on Wednesday and another on Thursday. He said he was in the process of setting a trap for the dog Thursday afternoon when the call came in about the attack at the Rock home
