A Toledo man arrested within an hour of the July 20 holdup of a restaurant manager was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to eight years in prison.

Hassan S. Hassan, 35, of 2146 Woodford St., was sentenced to consecutive sentences of four years for robbery and four years for felonious assault. He pleaded no contest to the charges Oct. 5.

Authorities said Hassan approached the manager of Original Gino's Pizza Restaurant as he walked to his car from the restaurant at 3981 Monroe St. Using a box cutter, Hassan cut Jason Filas in the chest during a struggle. He then escaped with the bag with the cash.

Authorities said Hassan planned the robbery after he heard a disgruntled worker discuss how the daily deposits were made. The employee, John Mattoni, 48, was initially charged with complicity in the commission of aggravated robbery. The charge was dismissed Oct. 7.
