10/29/2009

Three men recently sentenced to imprisonment by a federal judge for convictions on terrorism-related charges have each filed notice of their intentions to appeal.

Attorneys for Mohammad Amawi, Marwan El-Hindi, and Wassim Mazloum have each filed the notices, which will go to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.

At their sentencings in U.S. District Court in Toledo on Oct. 21, Amawi, 29, was given 20 years in prison; El-Hindi, 46, was ordered to spend a total of 13 1/2 years behind bars, and Mazloum, 27, was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison.

Judge James Carr also ordered that each man, after their releases, to be under the supervision of the federal probation department.

The three men were convicted by a jury in June, 2008, on two counts each of conspiring to kill or injure people - including U.S. military personnel - in the Middle East and of providing material support and resources to terrorists overseas.

Amawi and El-Hindi also were found guilty of two counts of distributing information related to explosives.

Amawi and El-Hindi noted they will appeal the denial of pretrial motions, the jury trial conviction, the denial of post-trial motions, and the sentence.

Attorneys for Mazloum indicated they will appeal his conviction.
