Blade outdoors editor wins top writing award

11/2/2009

Steve Pollick, Blade outdoors editor, has been awarded the highest newspaper writing honor of the year given by the Outdoor Writers Association of America for "The Flying Dragon," a Toledo Magazine/Outdoors Page article published Aug. 31, 2008.

He was one of five writers accorded "best of the best" honors in OWAA's newspaper, magazine, television/video, art/photo, and radio divisions. In the best-of-the-best competition, a panel of five judges, all OWAA past presidents, assesses first-place winners in the competition categories for its top selection.

The newspaper division includes 16 writing categories. Mr. Pollick won first place in the natural history division for "The Flying Dragon," about dragonflies and damselflies.

Mr. Pollick and the other four division honorees each will receive Presidents' Choice plaques.

This is the second time Mr. Pollick has won the best-of-the-best honor. In 1999, he won the President's Choice plaque for "Twilight of the Tiger," a three-day series in The Blade in May, 1998, on the status of the tiger in the wild, based on an expedition Mr. Pollick made to India and Nepal.
