A Toledo convenience store clerk was confronted by armed robbers outside the Stop & Go on Upton Avenue early Friday, less than 12 hours after another carryout employee was shot and killed. Two men wearing masks approached an employee of the convenience store at 3045 Upton Ave. at about 7 a.m. when he was arriving for work, police said. The men pointed handguns at him and demanded money.

Customers who came up a little short on their bills at the Lewis Carryout could always count on Bassam Kanouh. The smiling, friendly store clerk, known by many as “Sam,” regularly loaned money to those in need. But during his shift Thursday night, family members believe someone may have tried to rob Mr. Kanouh, 46. He was shot inside the West Toledo store, 4252 Lewis Ave., and later died.

Wood County health officials confirmed yesterday that a local resident became the first in the county to die of complications of swine flu. Kevin Babcock, 53, of Bowling Green died Wednesday at Wood County Hospital after battling pneumonia and bronchitis since August, his sister, Starlah Burks, said. She said he tested positive last week for the H1N1 virus. "In 2006, he had open-heart surgery and had a pacemaker put in," she said. "He has been fighting. He's just been struggling."

"Every morning, 350 days a year, I'm up here, reading the newspaper and drinking coffee," says Richard Rideout. "It's a big city and there's all this activity going on."

A Toledo man is in jail after confessing that he robbed a West Toledo bank Saturday, police said. Tim A. Hill II, 25, of 2665 Tremainsville Rd. was arrested at his home Saturday afternoon. Under questioning, police said, he admitted that he had entered the Huntington Bank branch at 2310 West Laskey Rd. shortly before 10 a.m., handed a teller a note demanding money, and fled with cash.
