Lucas County panel to weigh ban on puppy killings

11/24/2009

Lucas County Commissioners are to vote Tuesday on a resolution banning the dog warden from killing any puppies under 3 months of age, including “pit bull” pups, that aren't deemed sick by a licensed veterinarian.

The measure, sponsored by Commissioner Ben Konop, would formalize a Nov. 12 recommendation from the county's Dog Warden Advisory Committee for a temporary moratorium on puppy euthanasia at the pound. It also would require the warden to begin posting puppy photos on a county-sponsored Web site to facilitate adoption.

Dog Warden Tom Skeldon, who is to retire Jan. 31, recently told advisory committee members that he stopped killing most puppies at the pound except for “pit bull” puppies.
