Sylvania man enters plea over drugs found after fatal shooting of intruder

A Sylvania man who killed an intruder breaking into his home pleaded guilty to drug charges in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Friday over the multiple marijuana plants found by officers responding to the shooting.

Clay Hausenfleck, 46, pleaded guilty to one count each of possession of marijuana and cultivation of marijuana. He admitted that he was growing marijuana plants in his basement at 6945 Williamsburg Drive.

Hausenfleck called 911 just after 1 a.m. Aug. 28 to report he had shot an intruder after a break-in at his home. Officers reported finding the body of Louis M. Mason, 28, of Toledo, who died of two gunshot wounds.

A grand jury declined to indict Hausenfleck for murder but indicted him on three drug charges. As part of the plea agreement, one count of trafficking in marijuana will be dismissed, the felony level of cultivation charge was reduced, and the prosecutor's office recommended community control.

Judge Stacy Cook set a Feb. 22 sentencing date. Hausenfleck faces up to 10 years in prison.
