Trial date reset for man charged in Toledo slaying

1/22/2010

The trial date for a Toledo man charged in a capital murder case for the shooting death of a convenience store employee was rescheduled from Feb. 22 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on Thursday.

Anthony Belton, 24, of 934 Cuthbert Rd. now will go to trial on June 7 to face one count of aggravated murder and two counts of aggravated robbery, all with gun specifications. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

His attorneys sought a new trial date to allow more time to prepare for the trial. Judge Ruth Ann Franks yesterday approved the request and set a time line.

Mr. Belton is accused of shooting BP store clerk Matthew Dugan, 34, once in the back of the head during a robbery on Aug. 13, 2008.
