A baby girl born three months premature after her mother succumbed to traffic-crash injuries died Friday in Toledo Children's Hospital, authorities said.

The newborn died of partial asphyxia caused by the death of her mother, said Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner.

The mother, Kaitlin Knox, 22, of Defiance, died Thursday in Defiance Regional Medical Center, where the baby was delivered. Less than 90 minutes earlier, Ms. Knox had lost control of her vehicle on northbound State Rt. 15, went left of center, and struck an oncoming vehicle.

The accident occurred about six miles northwest of Defiance. The driver of the other vehicle was not hurt seriously.
