FREMONT — Two rural Fremont men were charged Wednesday with 34 counts of cruelty to animals after humane officers found 32 dogs and two tropical birds living in filthy conditions at their home.

Hoy Compton, 33, and Steve Harris, 47, are to be arraigned in Sandusky County Court in Clyde on the misdemeanors Feb. 23.

The Humane Society of Sandusky County, meanwhile, has been inundated with calls from people both local and out-of-state who want to adopt the basset hounds and Pomeranians seized during last Friday's raid.

Humane Officer Denny Hammond said none of the dogs can be placed in foster homes until after the owners' court appearance, and the prosecutor has advised the humane society to place the dogs in foster homes in Sandusky County if possible.
