Ruling on sex offender to be released Monday

3/6/2010

MONROE — The decision of the Michigan parole board on whether to overturn the scheduled release of convicted sex offender Rex Layman will be released Monday, authorities said.

The full 15-member Parole and Commutation Board yesterday reviewed the parole granted in August to Layman, a former Lambertville man convicted in 1998 of sexually assaulting two 8-year-old girls.

Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said the parole board's decision will be made public after Layman is notified on Monday.

Monroe County Prosecutor William Nichols filed an application in Monroe County Circuit Court to appeal the decision of a three-member panel of the parole board to release Layman, who has served nearly 11 years of the 8 to 30-year sentence. A hearing on the issue was adjourned yesterday by Judge Michael LaBeau for one week.
