Fewer Toledo area firms plan staff cuts, survey finds

3/9/2010

Although hiring in the Toledo area this spring is not expected to be better than it was a year ago, the number of firms expected to reduce employment is fewer than half what it was last year, a new survey found.

A Manpower Inc. survey done quarterly shows that 16 percent of local employers plan to add workers in the April-June period and 7 percent expect to cut staff. For the same period last year, 17 percent planned to hire and 13 percent planned to trim employment, according to the survey released today.

Nationally, the survey of 18,000 employers shows that 16 percent expect to hire and 8 percent plan to reduce their payrolls this spring. The survey said the best job prospects locally are in construction, business services, and hospitality sectors, and the worst are in retail and government.
