Michigan Street man held in alleged burglary

A third suspect is facing charges in the Feb. 20 burglary of a prison guard’s North Toledo home in which the home owner shot and killed one of the three suspects.

Jason Peace, 33, of 2038 North Michigan St. is charged with burglary and is being held in lieu of $151,500 bond in the Lucas County jail.

He was arrested Friday after a court appearance in an unrelated burglary. He is accused of taking copper and piping from the vacant Riverside Hospital on Nov. 22, court records show. His bond was set at $100,000 for the most recent burglary, $50,000 for the hospital break-in, and $1,500 for possession of criminal tools in the earlier crime, jailers said.

Homeowner Sedric Joplin, 40, a guard at the Toledo Correctional Institute, told police he returned to his home at 811 Galena St. about 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20 to find three suspects, whom police identified as Christopher Childress, 21, Michael Brown, Jr., 19, and Mr. Peace, 33.

Mr. Childress, a nephew of Mr. Peace, was killed by the homeowner. Mr. Brown was also shot but survived. Mr. Joplin will not face criminal charges, a grand jury decided.
