Six months ago, Alfred Lamar Evans was on parole. Sunday, he was dead.

Evans, 52, of 833 Nebraska Ave. was the suspect killed Sunday at Bengals Food Mart in South Toledo, police said.

He had a long criminal history that includes the attempted murder of a Columbus police officer, records show.

Evans was shot three times in the chest and abdomen during an apparent robbery attempt Sunday at the store at 2625 Airport Hwy.

Police say he approached the store about 10:15 a.m. wearing a wig and brandishing a handgun. A clerk at the store pulled out a gun and shot him near the store entrance, police said.

Police have not released the name of the clerk.

Evans was sentenced to 25 to 105 years in prison for a series of crimes committed in Franklin County between 1976 and 1980, including the 1980 attempted murder of a police officer, kidnapping, and two counts of aggravated robbery. He served 28 years behind bars.

In August, 2008, he was released from prison on parole. He fulfilled the standard obligations of parole in September, 2009, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correc-tions. Evans registered to vote from a Lincoln Avenue address in Toledo in September, 2008. According to police records, his criminal activity since then has been limited to misdemeanors.

He was using the alias of Alfred Dickerson when he was convicted of aggravated menacing and resisting arrest in July. He was ordered to pay $35 in court costs. His 30-day sentence was suspended under the condition that he would continue receiving counseling at Unison Behavioral Health Center, court records show.
