ADRIAN — An Adrian man was killed when he was struck by a tractor-trailer rig and then by a car early Wednesday in southern Lenawee County, authorities said.

Lee Purdy, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident about 5:30 a.m. on U.S. 223 east of M-52 in Madison Township, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Purdy was in the westbound lane of U.S. 223 when he was struck by a westbound semi driven by Donald Kelley, 53, of Battle Creek, Mich. The impact threw Mr. Purdy into the eastbound lane, where he was then struck by an eastbound car driven by Michael Elliott, 62, of Adrian, sheriff deputies said.

The semi driver had taken evasive action trying to avoid hitting Mr. Purdy, sheriff deputies said. The incident remained under investigation.
