A Perrysburg police officer was injured in a crash early Tuesday when a suspect he was transporting in a patrol car in the city escaped from restraints and grabbed the steering wheel, Perrysburg police said.

Officer Rich Cartwright was released from an area hospital after treatment later in the morning, Perrysburg police said.

Police identified the suspect as Jonathon Zapiecki, 24, of Ottawa Hills, who officers said was in custody after he was accused of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. After the crash, he was also charged with felonious assault of a police officer.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. on State Rt. 25 near West South Boundary Street. The vehicle went off the right side of the road, and then struck a telephone pole, a street sign, and a tall curb, officers said.
