Bond was set at $55,000 for an Ottawa Hills man charged in a crash that injured a Perrysburg police officer early yesterday, authorities said.

Jonathon Zapiecki, 24, of Ottawa Hills was charged with felonious assault on an officer and booked into the Wood County jail.

Officer Rich Cartwright was treated at an area hospital, police said.

Perrysburg police said Mr. Zapiecki had been in police custody in the back of a patrol car when he allegedly escaped from restraints and grabbed the steering wheel. The patrol car went off the road, striking a telephone pole, a street sign, and a tall curb, police said.

The crash occurred on State Rt. 25 near West South Boundary Street about 2 a.m. Mr. Zapiecki had been pulled over earlier and charged with driving under the influence, driving left of center, and speeding.

The date of his next court appearance has not been set, according to court records.
