The Andersons Inc. will expand two of its three stores in the Toledo area and its store in Columbus by about 22,500 square feet each, the Maumee company said Wednesday.

The expansions to the lawn and garden area and food area will be in two phases and should be completed by September.

Construction has begun at the general store on Illinois Avenue in Maumee and at the Talmadge Road store, the firm said. The greenhouse area at the Maumee store was dismantled in February to begin the work.

A first phase will add 12,500 square feet to the lawn and garden area to allow the retailer to expand lines of lawn and garden power equipment, garden tools, fertilizer and seed, patio furniture, and grills. The look of the garden centers will be updated, the company said. The first phase is expected to be finished by June.

The garden centers will remain open during construction.

A second phase will begin July 1 and expand the food areas by about 10,000 feet and use space previously stocked with indoor lawn and garden products.

The retailer said it plans to expand its food offerings by adding more seafood, bulk foods, sushi, artisan breads, produce, and wine and beer sections.
