Deadline reset for input on wastewater permit

4/19/2010

The comment deadline for the wastewater-discharge permit the state of Ohio has proposed for FirstEnergy Corp.'s coal-fired Bay Shore power plant in Oregon has been extended to May 29.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency document includes a timetable for a pilot project FirstEnergy has designed in hopes of reducing fish kills.

A utility contractor has begun installing reverse louvers in the channel where the plant's water intake is located.

Information on fish kills, as well as the utility's assessment of the plant's thermal plume at its discharge point, will be discussed at an Ohio EPA public hearing on Thursday.

The hearing is at 6: 30 p.m. in the Clay High School auditorium, 5665 Seaman Rd., Oregon.

Comments can be submitted then or in writing to the Ohio EPA's Division of Surface Water. The division's mailing address is P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049. The application and other related materials can be reviewed at the agency's northwest district office in Bowling Green with an appointment.
