'Joe the Plumber' to endorse two local candidates

Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as "Joe the Plumber," will make a foray into local politics Tuesday to endorse for Congress and Lucas County Commissioner.

Mr. Wurzelbacher of Springfield Township is expected to throw his support behind Andy Glenn for the Republican nomination for county commissioner and Jack Smith for the 9th Congressional District.

Joe the Plumber became well-known in 2008 when he debated tax policy on his front lawn with then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, who said he wanted to "spread the wealth." The phrase was picked up by Republicans and fueled criticism of Mr. Obama as a socialist.

Mr. Wurzelbacher went on to make campaign appearances for the Republican ticket, Sen. John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

The event is set for Tuesday morning at Government Center downtown.

Mr. Smith is running against Rich Iott for the GOP nomination for the seat held by U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) in the May 4 primary election.

Mr. Glenn, who attended the same high school as Mr. Wurzelbacher, is facing George Sarantou and Dan Steingraber for the GOP nomination for the county commissioner seat occupied by Democrat Ben Konop.
