2 murder suspects arraigned

    Bond was set at $500,000 each for two 18-year-old murder suspects accused in separate shootings last week.

    Jonathan G. Jackson, of 2142 Dana St. was charged with the murder of Donald Corrigan, 20, after turning himself in Friday.

    In the second case, Michael Taylor III, 1366 Grand Ave., was charged with the murder of Darrin Smith, 20, and will reappear in court today after public defender James MacHarg requested a continuance for Mr. Taylor to hire private counsel.

    Mr. Jackson is accused of shooting Corrigan outside an apartment building at 2010 Arlington Ave. about 2 a.m. Wednesday. The victim was armed, and police said the two exchanged gunfire before Corrigan was shot once in the chest and killed.

    Mr. Jackson had been convicted of delinquency in connection with burglary at age 16 in Lucas County juvenile court and served 30 days on house arrest. He has no prior adult criminal record.

    His attorney, John Potts, asked Judge C. Allen McConnell for a lower bond amount of $100,000, saying the suspect is enrolled in college and is not a flight risk. Mr. Jackson is studying to become a medical assistant at Southwestern College, Mr. Potts told The Blade.

    Mr. Taylor is accused of shooting Smith twice after an argument in the 1300 block of Grand about 10:50 p.m. Saturday. Family and neighbors have said the two were friends.

    Mr. Taylor was 15 when he was first convicted of delinquency in connection with assault in Lucas County juvenile court. He served nearly a year at the Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Correctional Facility after being convicted of delinquency in connection with felony robbery in February, 2007. He turned 18 at another facility, Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility, while serving 14 months for delinquency in connection with felony burglary. He was released in October, 2009.

    He also has no prior adult criminal record.
