Toledo teen charged with rape to be evaluated

A Toledo teenager charged with raping a woman on a West Toledo street in daylight withdrew his not guilty plea in Lucas County Common Pleas Court yesterday and was referred for a competency evaluation.

Anferney Fontenet, 15, was referred to the Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center. Judge Stacy Cook set a May 28 date to address issues of competency for trial and a possible plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

The teenager is charged with one count each of rape and aggravated robbery. He is in custody at the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

He is charged in the Jan. 19 midday assault of a woman on a Royalton Road sidewalk near Lyman Avenue. Authorities said he held a pair of scissors to the victim's neck and ignored her pleas to stop the assault.

When he left, he allegedly took the victim's cell phone with him. Co-defendant Te'Shayla Henderson, 19, of 3167 N. Detroit Ave., who is charged with receiving stolen property and obstruction of justice for allegedly taking the victim's phone from the teenager, will also return to court May 28.
