Shooter enters plea in Detroit Avenue ambush

A Toledo man accused of shooting a man after waiting for him to return home entered a plea in Lucas County Common Pleas Court yesterday.

Zelmer Coleman, 40, of 1128 Indiana Ave. entered an Alford plea yesterday to one count of attempted murder with a gun specification. He faces up to 13 years in prison when sentenced May 20 by Judge Frederick McDonald.

Assistant County Prosecutor Jevne Meader said Coleman waited outside the Detroit Avenue home of Derek Fisher on Jan. 15. When Fisher, 36, arrived home at about 8:30 p.m. that night, Coleman opened fire.

Fisher suffered gunshot wounds in his legs and lower abdomen. The two men are acquaintances, although Mr. Meader said it is unclear what precipitated the shooting.
