Owens-Illinois Inc. said Wednesday it is making the “lightest-ever North American wine bottle” weighing 27 percent less than similar bottles.

The company, which has said it was working on making lighter bottles, disclosed its new bottle is made at its California plant and weighs 11.6 ounces.

The company also announced it will make a 13-ounce, 750-milliliter claret bottle for customers on the East Coast, with L.D. Carlson Co. its first customer for this product. It is part of the firm's green initiatives, which include reduced energy usage and air emissions.
