6/3/2010

A Charter One Bank branch in South Toledo was robbed at gun point Thursday morning, and the suspect later shot himself as police tried to arrest him, authorities said.

The robbery at 1460 South Byrne Rd. between Glendale Avenue and Brenda Drive occurred about the time the bank opened at 9 a.m., according to Toledo police.

The suspect was last seen driving west on Brenda in a stolen dark-colored Lincoln, police said.

About 10:40 a.m. he was sitting his car when police approached to arrest him as a suspect in the bank robbery. He then drove across the street, lost control of the car, and struck the external stairs at 1205 Steeple Chase.

At some point he shot himself, police said.

As of 11:20 a.m. Thursday, there was no word on the victim's condition.
