Sandusky County bids to increase colon cancer screening

6/7/2010

FREMONT — To raise awareness about colon cancer screenings — and increase screening rates in Sandusky County — a free kick-off luncheon is being held June 22 at Fremont Memorial Hospital.

Nearly half of Sandusky County residents with colon cancer do not discover the disease until it reaches an advanced stage, when five-year survival rates drop from 91 percent to 11 percent.

Colorectal cancer can be prevented with a screening test, and it can be successfully treated if found early, the American Cancer Society, Sandusky Department of Health, and Fremont Memorial Hospital are stressing to residents.

Registration is required by June 18 for the kick-off luncheon, which features several speakers, by calling 419-334-6390.
