Layoff notices will be given Friday to 16 members of the Lucas County Sheriff's Office in a continual attempt to reduce the department's budget deficit, officials said.

Jail Administrator Jim O'Neal confirmed that notices are slated to be given out Friday to members throughout the department. The slips give a 14-day notice to employees about their pending layoff, he said.

The layoffs are another step in the department's attempts to close a more than $1.1 million budget hole. Officials said that the department would save $16,946 per notice for a total of about $271,000.

A recent allocation of $262,000 from the Lucas County commissioners dropped the initial budget deficit from nearly $1.5 million down to the current gap.

That still leaves more than $800,000 that the department has to cut to reach its allotted 2010 budget of $33,244,892, officials said. Although no additional layoff notices were announced, it continues to be a possibility, Mr. O'Neal said.
