Three area colleges to share in grants to save energy

Lourdes College, Bowling Green State University, and Defiance College are among 14 organizations in Ohio sharing $10.7 million in grants aimed at improving energy efficiency in facilities.

Lourdes, which is in Sylvania, is to receive $976,798 to install central air conditioning, occupancy sensors and controls, and energy-efficient windows and lighting in the Mother Adelaide Hall. BGSU is to receive $911,658 to upgrade the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system in Hayes Hall, and Defiance College is to receive $753,112 to install efficient lighting campuswide and replace windows in Dana and McReynolds halls.

The Ohio Department of Transportation also was awarded nearly $1.7 million to install renewable energy and energy-efficiency technologies at rest areas along highways in Wood, Ashtabula, and Belmont counties.

The grants are through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant: Local Governments and State Energy Program.
