Terry Terhark said doing "the right thing" for his employees largely contributed to his winning a regional award for entrepreneurs.

"Just create an environment where people want to work," he said. Part of that atmosphere is giving employees flexibility in work hours and often letting them work from home, he said.

Mr. Terhark, chief executive of the company the RightThing Inc. in Findlay was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for business services in a region that covers Michigan and northwest Ohio. The honor won last week entitles him and seven other regional winners in Detroit to vie for national honors in November.

More than 200 entrepreneurs were nominated for the regional awards, and winners were chosen by a panel of 10 judges.

Mr. Terhark started the RightThing, a company that handles hiring for larger organizations, in 2003 with about 250 employees. Now, it has more than 650 employees, with locations in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Vermont. Mr. Terhark predicted the firm will grow more than 20 percent in the next year.

The award, he said, is a testament to his company's practices and success.
