CANTON, Ohio — Federal authorities have charged a former Stark County official with stealing nearly $3 million from a treasurer's office.

Vince Frustaci, former Stark County chief deputy treasurer, was charged Friday in U.S. District Court in Cleveland with one count of conspiracy and one count of theft.

Frustaci is accused of stealing nearly $2.7 million in public funds collected from taxpayers but never deposited in county accounts.

The investigation by federal authorities and State Auditor Mary Taylor also found two county checks worth $230,000 that Frustaci allegedly deposited at a local bank.

Frustaci was fired last year after Taylor says he admitted to the theft. A message was left Friday for his attorney, Bradley Iams, seeking comment.
