A South Toledo man was stabbed in the back near his residence Monday night after he and another man exchanged heated words, Toledo police Sgt. William Wauford said.

Robert Heckert, 26, was taken to University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital. A spokesman had no information about a patient by that name.

Mr. Heckert was outside his home in the 2200 block of South Avenue about 8:15 p.m. when he and a man in a passing van quarreled. The man got out of the van and stabbed Mr. Heckert in the left side of the back with a six-inch folding knife, Sergeant Wauford.

Mr. Heckert told police he did not know the man.
