A prominent Toledo Police sergeant was found dead Monday morning at his home of what appear to be natural causes, authorities said.

Sgt. Keith Miller, 52, who was recently awarded the department's highest honor, was found dead at his North Toledo home about 8:15 a.m. Monday. The cause of his death initially appeared to be natural, Chief Mike Navarre said.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled, but could happen as soon as Tuesday, a spokesman for the Lucas County Coroner's Office said.

This spring, Sergeant Miller and another officer were honored with the department's Medal of Valor for saving hostages during the May, 2009, incident in which a man shot his neighbors on Allendale Drive under the delusion that they had kidnapped his parents.

After an attempt at negotiation failed, Sergeant Miller shot and killed the suspect, Richard Dale Carr II, with a single bullet in the head.
