The gas line was hit about noon in front of a Sonic Drive-In being built on Secor across from Home Depot, south of I-475 and north of Central Avenue.
Gas spewed out of the broken pipe and city crews diverted northbound and southbound traffic through nearby parking lots.
Service was disrupted to McDonald's and Popeye's Chicken fast-food restaurants, but no residential customers were affected and no injuries were reported, according to Chris Kozak, a spokesman for Columbia Gas.
Utility workers finished repairing the pipe and restored service to the two restaurants about 6:30 p.m., Mr. Kozak said.
The new Sonic Drive-In restaurant is scheduled to open in mid-July or early August.
