The Toledo man accused in the July 18 stabbing death of a University of Toledo student appeared in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on Thursday to face a charge of murder.

Lawrence Fitzgerald James, 24, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Court-appointed attorney Adrian Cimerman said after the arraignment that he will likely be requesting that James be evaluated for competency and possibly a not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

James is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $750,000 bond. Judge Ruth Ann Franks scheduled a Sept. 7 trial date.
