Church bells will toll to recall 9/11 attacks

9/10/2010

Church bells will toll in the Toledo area tomorrow in remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The tolling will begin at 8:45 a.m. to coincide with the attack on the first World Trade Center tower in New York City and run two minutes.

"Cooperation between the cities, villages, townships, and, most important, the churches, has been tremendous," Maumee Mayor Tim Wagener said.

Mayor Wagener has been joined by Toledo Mayor Mike Bell, Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough, and Perrysburg Mayor Nelson Evans in urging all churches in the area to participate.

CLYDE, Ohio - Two 17-year-old boys suspected of vandalizing more than 170 headstones at McPherson Cemetery are being held in the Sandusky County Juvenile Detention Center.

Clyde police said the boys were arrested Wednesday night; one was charged with delinquency in connection with felony vandalism, the other for a probation violation.

A reward of more than $8,200 was collected. Police said the money would be returned to donors because information leading to the two suspects came from one of the boys.

Thirteen headstones were knocked over Aug. 25 and 158 other stones were damaged on two subsequent nights. Police said more than 50 grave sites also were desecrated.

Suspected marijuana plants were pulled from the ground after plots were observed during aerial surveillance by law enforcement officers in northwest Ohio.

Sandusky County sheriff's deputies working with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation seized 381 plants Tuesday and Wednesday, including 120 in one location.

In Putnam County, members of the Multi Area Narcotics Task Force recovered 210 plants in the Cloverdale, Fort Jennings, and Rimer areas last week.

A public remembrance for Thomas "Lud" Ashley, the longtime Toledo congressman, will be from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Toledo Club, his son Meredith said.

Mr. Ashley died June 15. He represented Toledo in Congress from 1955-1980.

A private service was held earlier in Washington, at which former President George H.W. Bush spoke. The two were friends since their student days at Yale University in the 1940s.

Mr. Ashley was nationally known for his work on landmark housing, anti-poverty, and civil rights legislation. Still, he was most proud of the ways he was able to help his hometown, his son said in June.
