Caged dog that survived gunshots is in sanctuary
9/10/2010Sarge, the East Toledo German Shepherd who survived six gunshot wounds, is now a permanent resident of a Utah animal sanctuary.
The Toledo Area Humane Society announced Friday Sarge is settling into life at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill sanctuary in southern Utah that grants animals lifetime care.
Sarge and another humane society dog, Poppy, arrived at Best Friends on Thursday in the care of John Brown, the society's dog trainer.
The trio flew from Detroit to Las Vegas, and made a 3 -hour drive to the sanctuary outside of Kanab, Utah. Poppy is a female mixed-breed dog said to be very shy.
Their trip was delayed nearly two weeks after Sarge bit the wife of a humane society employee.
The case against Sarge’s former owner, Lawrence Mick, 57, of 631 Federal St., one of two men charged with shooting Sarge in a cage, is scheduled to continue at 11 a.m. Friday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.
Each man has said the other shot Sarge as the dog tried to break out of the cage.
