Fire caused heavy damage Sunday to an occupied South Toledo duplex.

Toledo Fire Lt. Angie Magers said firefighters were called to the two-story wood-frame structure at 121 Gibbons St. off Western Avenue at 2:18 p.m. and found flames coming out the rear second-floor windows. Both units were occupied, although no one was home in the upstairs apartment, she said.

The fire appeared to have started in the walls, Lieutenant Magers said, and investigators said the cause apparently was electrical.

Queen McQuin, 77, who lives downstairs and gets around in a wheelchair, said her boyfriend and her daughter helped her get out after they heard the smoke alarm. “I'm just glad it didn't happen at night,” she said.
