An Ohio Highway Patrol officer was seriously hurt early Wednesday morning when he went off the road after swerving to avoid a vehicle that pulled out in front of him near Toledo Express Airport, troopers said.

Trooper Joshua Bolduan, 28, was flown to Toledo Hospital with critical injuries after he was extricated from his cruiser. His condition improved overnight and he is in fair condition, according to a spokesman for ProMedica.

Trooper Bolduan was eastbound on Airport Highway near Wilkins Road — the western border of the airport property in Swanton — at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday when a vehicle turned left onto the highway in front of him. The trooper swerved to avoid colliding with the other vehicle, and went off the south side of the roadway. He struck a sign, and was trapped inside his vehicle.

Trooper Bolduan is a seven-year veteran of the force, troopers said.
