A two-alarm fire broke out Monday night at the former Plabell Rubber Co. site, 300 South St. Clair St., across from the main Post Office building.

Fire crews were called around 10:47 p.m. and a second alarm was requested about 5 minutes later, fire dispatchers said, with a total of eight trucks at the scene.

The fire was reported in the rear of the structure and fire crews were sent to the roof to douse flames. It was declared under control at 11:43 p.m.

It's current owner could not be immediately identified.

The rubber-products producer, founded in 1945, folded quietly in 2006.

In December, 2008, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authorities sought a state grant to pay for removal of contamination.

Fire officials said no chemicals were found inside.
